Just When I Needed It…An Unexpected Encounter at the Grocery Store

It was a tough day.

A big presentation at work, a restless night’s sleep, an all-around anxiety-laden day due to some personal stuff going on.

I’m usually on board with the idea of “things happen for a reason”.  Truly, I am.

Admittedly, there are times where I look to the sky and think, “Really?!?  You’ve GOT to be freaking kidding me. What the hell is going on?”

But today?  I wholeheartedly agree.

I had an appointment mid-afternoon close to home and decided to make a quick grocery run afterwards.  I was kind of drifting through the store, not really paying attention to what I was doing, with a mind that was going a million different directions all at one time.  Then as I rounded a corner, I saw a familiar face of someone I had known since grade school but hadn’t seen in many years.  Thankfully I quickly snapped out of my daze to give her a hug and a smile.  We chatted for a few minutes, asked about things we had seen on each other’s Facebook pages, and then said goodbye.

I realized a few seconds later that I felt calmer just after the simple act of speaking to her.

In almost a serendipitous way, I exchanged smiles, a couple laughs, and a good hug in the middle of the grocery with someone I hadn’t seen in years but who I look up to greatly.  I think the big guy upstairs realized that I needed something to jolt me out of my haze and calm my nerves.

I was at a store I don’t normally shop at…at a time I’m usually still at least an hour away downtown at work.  And I just so happened to run into a woman I find incredibly inspirational who I haven’t seen or spoken to in-person since maybe college sometime?

You see, she has endured some of life’s biggest challenges in the past few years – losing her mother, losing a child to a horrible disease before his first birthday, an unexpected divorce.  She has seemingly managed to make her way through those troubled waters with a grace and strength not many people have.  She started a blog as an outlet for her emotions and to help others who may be going through tough times, and I’ve enjoyed keeping up with her through social media.

Nothing going on in my life is close to what she’s experienced.

But as odd as it may sound, I think the right-in-your-face reminder that people can overcome really crappy things and come out the other side stronger helped ease my worries this afternoon.

I have no idea if she’ll ever read this, but M, if you do – thank you for chatting today.

Running into her this afternoon wasn’t a coincidence.  I’m certain that it happened for a reason 🙂

Stop and Smell the Sunrises

Yes… I know it’s technically “stop and smell the roses”.  And smelling sunrises doesn’t make sense nor is it possible. But my blog, my rules 🙂

The whole point of the “stop and whatever-you-choose” is to pause from life’s craziness to give yourself a break and find a bit of joy in the small stuff. Roses or other flowers, sunrises or sunsets, a small child running around a playground with a huge smile on his face or stomping on the ground so he or she can see shoes light up, a cute furry puppy, etc.

Taking a deep breath and focusing on something other than life’s busyness for even just a minute or two can be refreshing and rejuvenating. Promise.

You might even stop and smell the sunrise like I did this morning 😉

DWTS Faves, Vol. 1

I love the TV show “Dancing With The Stars” and have been watching it for a long time.

Clearly, if you’ve read another post or two, you know I also love music.  So when that is combined with some amazing dancing and entertaining pros and celebrities, it makes me happy.

I’m going to share some of my favorite dances and moments from DWTS on this blog every so often.  Here are a couple to get this series started.  Enjoy!

Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson, Paso Doble to “Turn Down For What”

Noah Galloway and Sharna Burgess, Argentine Tango to “Rather Be”

(side note – if you don’t know this guy’s story, give it a quick Google.  military veteran who lost his arm and most of one leg in a roadside bomb and had a long road to recovery.)

Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough, Quickstep to “Hey Pachuco”

It’s All In A State of Mind

I don’t remember exactly what grade I was in, but I believe it was 5th or 6th grade when a teacher had us memorize this poem.

Being only 10 or 11 at the time, I didn’t fully grasp its meaning, but I certainly get it now.  Adulting has a way of doing that to you 🙂

The author, Walter D Wintle, was a late 19th/early 20th century poet, but not much else is known about his life.  Whatever happened over the course of his time on this earth, he sure understood the ‘mind over matter’ mantra.  Enjoy!

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you like to win, but you think you can’t,
It’s almost a “cinch” you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost.
For out in the world you find
Success begins with a fellow’s will;
It’s all in the state of mind.

Full many a race is lost
Ere ever a step is run;
And many a coward fails
Ere ever his work’s begun.
Think big and your deeds will grow,
Think small and you’ll fall behind,
Think that you can and you will;
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are.
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man.
But sooner or later, the man who wins,
Is the fellow who thinks he can.

Music Monday! I Turn To You

I love love love the 90’s and 00’s Sirius XM channels.  Soooo many high school and college flashbacks.  And for me, music can immediately evoke memories or feelings or remind me of certain people or situations.  Heck, sometimes I feel like actually I think in song lyrics 🙂

I’ve been in the car more than usual the past week or so, and I heard Christina Aguilera’s “I Turn To You” on my beloved 90’s channel.  I believe it was one of her first few releases when she came onto the music scene, and I dig it.  It is absolutely a MUST sing-along for me and on my sometimes-you-just-gotta-belt-out-a-killer-power-ballad-when-you’re-alone-in-the-car playlist.

I think one of the reasons I love it is because it a timeless song to me.  The lyrics are so applicable to any number of relationships, friendships, etc.  I can honestly say I think of a few different people when I hear it – those who I personally can turn to.

Here are the lyrics and a cheesy 90s music video 🙂

“I Turn To You” by Christina Aguilera

When I’m lost, in the rain,
in your eyes I know I’ll find the light to light my way.
When I’m scared, losing ground, when my world is going crazy,
You can turn it all around.
And when I’m down you’re there pushing me to the top.
You’re always there giving me all you’ve got.

For a shield from the storm, for a friend, for a love to keep me safe and warm, I turn to you.
For the strength to be strong, for the will to carry on,
For everything you do, for everything that’s true, I turn to you.

When I lose the will to win, I just reach for you and I can reach the sky again.
I can do anything, ’cause your love is so amazing, Cause your love inspires me.
And when I need a friend you’re always on my side,
Giving me faith to get me through the night.

For a shield from the storm, for a friend, for a love to keep me safe and warm, I turn to you.
For the strength to be strong, for the will to carry on,
For everything you do, for everything that’s true, I turn to you.

For the arms to be my shelter through all the rain.
For truth that will never change.
For someone to lean on.
For a heart I can rely on through anything.
For the one who I can run to.

For a shield from the storm, for a friend, for a love to keep me safe and warm, I turn to you.
For the strength to be strong, for the will to carry on,
For everything you do, for everything that’s true, I turn to you.

Friday Funnies, courtesy of Pinterest!

I’ve recently started exploring Pinterest again after abandoning it for awhile. I have a board called “funny ha-ha” on which I save things that are particularly amusing to me.

And I’ve decided I’m gonna share some of my faves here for Friday Funnies 🙂

(the one above was the very first meme I saved to Pinterest – ahhh memories 🙂 )

On the Importance of Writing…

I’ve missed writing.  A lot.  And I wonder why I haven’t made it more of a priority when the simple act of typing on a computer screen can serve so many purposes for me…

Sometimes I write to share fun things.  Or to enjoy memories that make me smile and reminisce.  Or because I want to save a video or news story or lyrics or poem.

Sometimes it’s getting feelings out on paper when you can’t share them aloud.

Sometimes it’s about sorting through your thoughts to help you work through confusion.

Sometimes you need a reset button when you’re feeling down or in a funk.

It’s therapeutic in many ways.  And I think back to why I started this blog.  Here’s an excerpt from my very first post:

Long story short, at the very end of a three-week trip to Europe with my family, I ended up sobbing in a hotel room for quite a long time as a result of feeling completely overwhelmed at all of the crummy things happening in the world.  (I am not normally a crier.)  The few English television stations we had access to were running what seemed like 24/7 coverage of the Charleston shootings, racism in America, and the atrocious dog festival in China.  It seemed like there was literally nothing positive to report on, and I got to a point where I simply couldn’t take it anymore.

Yes, part of it was exhaustion and just being ready to get home, but never before had I thought, “The world is such a sucky place right now.”  MAJOR PROBLEM…that’s not me.  I’m generally a pretty positive, upbeat person.  But between the news, the dark thoughts that had crossed my mind, and even more recently the constant bitching and complaining about one thing or another on Facebook, I’ve had it.

So, enter this blog.  Whether it’s a quote I like, a song I find inspiring, a photo that makes me smile, or a story that warms my heart, I’m going to post it here.  This will be a ‘happy place’ of sorts; somewhere that’s completely void of negativity.

‘You know that bad things are gonna happen, right?’  Absolutely – I’m not naive.

‘Don’t you realize that there are serious problems in the world around me?’  Yep.

‘So why are you ignoring them?’  I’m not – I’m just choosing not to focus on them and instead finding the happy🙂

It’s still all true.  There are still crummy things happening (some would argue more now than last year).  Complaining on Facebook feels like it’s at an all-time high with the upcoming US Presidential election (oy).  While I may not be the same person I was last summer – more on that to come in a future post – this blog is every bit as important now as it was then.

So I shall start writing again.  More consistently.  Still focusing on and still finding the happy.

And still enjoying my dang tiara 😀
