A unique way of looking at it 🙂
Everyone knows one of the most famous lines from the movie Forrest Gump – “Life’s like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
Well, sorry Forrest. My husband and I came up with a better analogy a couple weeks ago.
Life’s like a bag of jelly beans. Mostly you’ll get sweet moments, but there will inevitably be tart, sour, or even nauseating flavors, too. Don’t let those off-putting bites keep you from diving back in and continuing to enjoy the rest of the bag 🙂
Yesterday, I decided to treat myself to a pedicure before a family wedding. I was reading a magazine and only kinda hearing the music that was on in the background, but about fifteen minutes in, I put my book down and started really listening.
See, something in my brain triggered that the lyrics flowing into my ears weren’t matching the melody that I knew belonged with those words. Turns out that it was a Sam Smith cover of Whitney Houston’s hit “How Will I Know” – but a suuuuuper slow and soulful version of it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE.
I mean, besides the fact that he has an incredible voice that just begs you to listen, I couldn’t remember hearing a song turned on its head like that. I’m not talking about the live or unplugged versions of songs, but to use his words from a Rolling Stone article, “I love the juxtaposition of a melancholy lyric with an upbeat sound. People forget that’s how she rose to fame. The more mature Whitney, like ‘I Will Always Love You,’ came later.”
I’m still in awe almost 24 hours later. Seriously, take a couple minutes and check it out below. It’s an absolutely beautiful rendition.
And HELLO, that voice with just a piano backing him up? Swoon 😀
(And yes, I know this was released almost three years ago, but I swear the first time I heard it was yesterday. Guess I gotta stay on top of music things a bit better 😉 )
I can’t begin to count how any CD mixes I have. Some I made myself, some are from friends, some are from my husband. I find it hilarious to pop one in a CD player now and just see what comes out of the speakers.
Sometimes, it’s utter and complete randomness. (You know who you are – hehe 🙂 ) Other times, there’s a theme of some sort – songs about friends, stay awake music, chill, dance party, lovey dovey songs, new music someone wants me to check out, etc.
And even pre-CDs, I very much remember sitting in my room with a blank cassette tape in my stereo, listening to the radio and rushing to hit the the “record” button the instant I recognize a song I like come on. Anyone else?
I haven’t received any new ones in quite awhile – HINT HINT to any friends who feel like playing DJ for me 😀
But here are a few songs that I’ve been listening to more than a time or two lately. Some new, some older tunes that I never get sick of.
(Goes without saying, but I suppose I fall into more of the randomness camp – LOL.)
If YOU have any new music you think I should check out or random playlists you want to share, comment below or email me at meandmytiara (at) gmail.com
P.S. – I realize CDs are a tad old school and not used much anymore, but I don’t care. I’m sure there’s some way to share iTunes or Spotify lists or whatever – I’m just not that fancy 🙂
Anyone else a fan of the TV series “Scrubs”?
I didn’t watch it a ton when it was first airing, but thanks to re-runs and Netflix, I’ve seen just about every episode. Sadly, I read that it’s being removed from Netflix this month. Booooo.
I’ve been watching a couple episodes here and there, enjoying it while I can. And two scenes struck me as particularly important (and relevant to me personally). One was in Season 1 and is about taking chances, and the other is in Season 8 and addresses happiness. Fitting, isn’t it? A memorable lesson from the first and last seasons. (I don’t count Season 9. It’s dumb.)
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about taking chances, and how it’s really just about overcoming your fears. Because the truth is, every time you take a big risk in your life, no matter how it ends up, you’re always glad you took it. – Season 1, Episode 12, “My Blind Date”
Man, isn’t this the truth. Every chance you take, regardless of how it turns out, teaches you something – even when we don’t like admitting it. Taking chances, whether they’re big or small, can be very scary. At the end of the day, I guess sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and jump. You may fly, you may fall, but either way it will be a hell of a ride 🙂
Who the hell cares what anyone else thinks? Just look into your heart and do whatever the hell makes you happy. – Season 8, Episode 4, “My Happy Place”
PREACH, Kelso. Preach.
I’ll miss catching Scrubs episodes on Netflix, but there’s always iTunes, right? As a fun bonus, here are a couple of scenes that always make me chuckle. Enjoy!
(Turk auditions for an air band. Can Donald Faison move or WHAT?!? Kind of a precursor to Lip Sync Battle, eh?)
(Dance montage during a slow night in the hospital of the cast getting their groove on during random episodes. LOVE!
